Day 3: It’s Not the Placebo Effect, My Rosacea is Healing!

I’m very excited to be able to report to you that after the red light therapy treatment that I completed last night, I experienced more improvements in my rosacea symptoms.

I mentioned in my last post that I was afraid that I might have been so eager to get results from the LED red light that I was using for the first time, that I might have been experiencing the placebo effect.  I was so unsure that I emailed the company where I got the kit (Smarter Lights, formerly Light Therapy Options).

Now that another day has passed (and another rosacea treatment), I am absolutely certain that there has been a difference. The pink colour of my cheeks has faded a little bit more (I’m talking a tiny bit, but enough that I can definitely notice it), and the little bumps seem to be healing up now.  The bumps are flatter (not as raised) and they don’t seem to look as angry anymore.

A brief note about the bumps as symptoms of rosacea…

These are not regular pimples.  They are not caused by the same bacteria that leads to those in acne vulgaris.  They may be referred to as acne rosacea, but as far as I’m concerned, that is a misnomer.

On me, a flare-up that leads to the bumps can cause the little pimple-like bumps that will stick around for a few hours, or they may be around for days or even weeks.  They’re bumpy on the skin but they’re not the same as an acne infection.  They are a symptom of the irritation and inflammation, but not necessarily an infection. Therefore, the last thing that I would recommend doing (in my non-professional, non-licensed, non-expert opinion) is to use any kind of anti-acne product on an area with rosacea bumps.  Rant done.

Back to the regularly scheduled natural rosacea treatment program…

Overall, since I’ve started the right light therapy, my skin looks healthier (which is nice) and it feels better.  A lot better.  It feels better to the touch (noticeably softer because it normally feels like a very fine grit sandpaper), and it isn’t tight, itchy, hot, or burning.

I think I’ve really found my groove now in terms of using the LED red light, too.  I like to hold onto the light instead of clamping it to something (it comes with a clamp light) or putting it into a goose-neck lamp. I have no idea why that is my preference, but I’m working on embracing my weirdness.  I found it somewhat awkward the first time that I used it, but this time, I shifted around until I found a very good system and I plan to repeat that technique from now on.

This natural rosacea treatment is so easy that all I want to do is by far the best one I’ve ever tried and I’ve only been benefiting from it for 48 hours.  Not too shabby!

Check out the progress my chin pimple made (right picture).  It’s nearly gone.  I don’t get a lot of regular pimples, but it worked very fast on clearing that one up. I’d be willing to bet that it will be gone, tomorrow.

Day 2 – The First 24 Hours After Light Therapy for Rosacea

I have to say that things are off to a great start!  I woke up this morning and looked in the mirror and once I could see past the blurry pre-coffee vision, I could tell that something was different.  It was something good!

The redness in my face had decreased!  I’m not kidding.  It wasn’t dramatic.  Likely, I would have been the only one who would notice the difference, but if you’re anything like me, then you know the redness from your rosacea VERY well, so you know when it’s flaring up and you know when it’s easing off.  This was more than just easing off.

The only way that I can think to describe it is that it wasn’t as “red” as much as it was “enthusiastic pink”.  The bumps were all still there but they just didn’t seem as angry and irritated.

The red light therapy for rosacea took away other symptoms, too!

What I did feel sure about was that for the first time in eons, my face wasn’t hot with a burning feeling, itchy, or uncomfortably tight.  The visible difference wasn’t huge, but the comfort level was amazing.  On the “inside”, it felt like normal skin!

I felt a little bit giddy about it so I contacted the customer support at Light Therapy Options (where I gott the LED red light therapy kit I’m using – I use the Peak 630 Red LED Light, in case you want to know exactly which one I’m trying).  I asked if I was experiencing a placebo effect, because I’m trying to be very “scientific” about this blog and about the way that I am tracking the progress.

It’s not the placebo effect! I guess it’s not uncommon for rosacea sufferers to see a fading in the redness as soon as overnight after the first treatment.  Awesome!

The way that I understand it is that the energy from the red light wavelengths works in the cells to promote healing but it also works as a gentle anti-inflammatory.  Reducing inflammation means decreasing redness, among other benefits.  WOO HOO! 🙂

This evening, I did my second round of red light therapy for rosacea.  It was 90 seconds on the right side, 90 seconds on the front, and 180 seconds on the left side, just like yesterday (I haven’t seen a difference in the progress between the right and left side, yet).

That said, check out the progress that the ugly red pimple on my chin has made!  I can completely believe that this would work for acne. If you’ve tried that for acne, please comment in the box below this blog.  I’d love to hear about it.

Day 1 – LED Red Light Therapy for Rosacea

My first day using the red light therapy on my rosacea went well, I think.  It’s hard to tell because I didn’t have any miraculous immediate results (not that I was expecting anything).  But nothing got worse, so I consider that a great first day.

So many of the topical treatments that I’ve tried have caused flare-ups within the first few minutes, so it’s always nice when nothing devastating happens right off the bat.

Here are the steps I took for the first treatment using red light therapy for rosacea:

  • Washed my face (I have been using Eucerin DermatoCLEAN Mild Cleansing Lotion for about 2 years and it seems to do the trick, except in getting sunscreen off…but that’s another story).
  • Gently patted my face dry with a small, soft microfiber towel (I get mine at the dollar store so that I can have enough of them that I can toss them in the wash after each use.  This helps to ensure that I’m never accidentally applying dirt, product, makeup, dust, or anything else unwanted to my clean face).
  • Downloaded a kitchen timer app so that I’d be able to time the use of the red light therapy treatments on each “zone” of my face even with the goggles on.
  • Set up my tablet within reach so that I could easily use the timer.
  • Sat down in a comfortable position.
  • Put on the “Super Sunnies” protective goggles.
  • Started the timer.
  • Shone the LED red light on my right cheek for a minute and a half (90 seconds).
  • Shone it on the front of my face for a minute and a half.
  • Shone it on my left cheek for 3 minutes (180 seconds).

That’s it!

Then I immediately took pictures of my cheeks:

As you can see, there really isn’t any difference between these pictures and my original “before” pictures, but I really wasn’t expecting something to happen immediately after a 90 second to 180 second treatment. My skin cells haven’t had time to do anything with all of that red light energy!

Alright, there is one difference (ugh!) a nasty red pimple that decided to appear on my chin overnight. That said, red light therapy is supposed to be good for acne, too, so I decided not to crop it out of the photo.  So much for my pride!  I’m hoping that I’ll remember to include my chin in the pics that I take over the next few days so we can watch the red light wavelengths nuke that thing right off my face, too!

The main reason that I’ve added the pictures is to show that it also didn’t make the rosacea symptoms any worse while using it. Also, I’m trying to practice taking selfies in a way that will be truer to the colour of the redness of my skin.

Clearly I still need work since the right side of my face looks like the light is more yellow than the white light that seems to be shining on me for the left side.  I have no idea why that’s happening since I’m standing in the same spot, facing the same direction, using the same tablet for both shots.  If you have any advice for taking pictures that will be truer to the red colour on my face, please feel welcome to share them in the comments below this post.

I do feel that it’s worth noting that it was a very calming experience.  I just shut my eyes and did some slow breathing techniques (sometimes I like to pretend that I can meditate…I can’t).  Other than that, it didn’t feel like anything.  I’m not sure what I expected.  I think I thought that it would feel warm.  It didn’t.  It just felt like a lot of red was shining on me, and that’s it.

We’ll see what happens overnight.

My Peak 630™ Red LED Light Therapy for Rosacea Set Arrived!

I can’t tell you how excited I was when my red light therapy for rosacea kit arrived in the mail.  It was last week, but I will post my progress from now on.

The kit was very neatly packed and it was clear that a lot of care was taken to make sure that it arrived safely.  I admit that I was a little nervous about shipping lights, but these items were all very well protected and now that I’ve unpacked the box, I can tell that this isn’t a delicate product, anyway.  I’ll be confident bringing this with me when I travel.  

To me, that’s important.  Since many of the reasons that I travel have to do with making guest author appearances, I would rather not forgo treating my rosacea and minimizing the redness since I will be speaking in front of groups of people.

The package included: The welcome materials/user manual, the “sunnies” (protective goggles), the clamp light, the Peak 630 LED red light therapy bulb.

I read the user manual all the way through (yes, I’m one of “those” people) and found out that red light therapy for rosacea requires me to shine the light 6 inches to 12 inches from my face for 90-180 seconds per area of the face (left side, front, and right side).  That’s it!  🙂

Since I don’t know whether or not more is better, I’m going to start off by testing one side of my face with 90 seconds and the other side of my face with 180 seconds (and 90 seconds for the front).  That way, I’ll see which side has better progress.  When I know, I’ll use that length of time on both sides of my face.

I’ll start off by using the red light therapy for rosacea every day.  Once I feel that my face has healed up, I will knock it back to once or twice per week for maintenance.

Although red light therapy hasn’t ever been associated with any negative side effects, I appreciate the little protective “sunnies” goggles that were sent along with the package.  I know that blue light therapy (which is not a part of this rosacea treatment) has been associated with macular degeneration, but red light doesn’t appear to come with this risk.  Still, the light is VERY bright, so I am glad to have the protection not only for “just in case” but also for the added shade!

I am very hopeful that this will work for me.  I feel that I have managed to find the right things to do (and not to do) to keep my rosacea under control, but I want a natural treatment that will allow me to overcome the bumps and redness without constantly slathering prescription medications onto my skin.

I know that there are several places that sell LED red light therapy for rosacea products, but in this case, the one I chose was from Light Therapy Options.  It’s the PEAK 630 Red LED light kit. The price was competitive and the customer service is exceptional.  I was given some great advice and am looking forward to seeing if it works as well as I think it will.
